So I’m in India for 1 day and everything everybody has been telling/warning me about, I’ve seen already.
It smells. Well not as bad as I’ve been made to believe, but there are certainly some smaller streets with a very pungent aroma. Think rotten fish with a little piss and a dash of decomposing dog.
Cows are everywhere. Just outside the airport and there are cows tied up eating plastic bags and domestic waste – they have to, there’s no grass anywhere!
The drivers are insane. So we’re in a cab and we’re overtaking a rickshaw, whose overtaking a bicycle. Coming the other way is another motorbike taking over a bus, but it all works out just in time – and at the same time there are several people trying to cross the road, and a few cows wandering around of course.
There are lots of slums. We’ve driven past a few places with makeshift housing, but nobody seems really sad, everyone smiles. Compare this to African slums where the people just stare and look starved/disturbed. Maybe its just Kerala, maybe it’s a sadder state of affairs further north. I hope not though.
The power cuts out all the time. It certainly does! One minute you’re lying in your bed with the fan on full blast trying to cool off, then. Then nothing, quiet, and all of a sudden you’re sweating like John Prescott in a pie shop. NO fan, NO need.
One thing that I never got, ad that which i was warned most about, was any hassle, nothing. Got off the plane, went through immigration and got bags, paid for a prepay taxi to Kovalam, straight into taxi, got there – alive surprisingly, with the way everyone drives, got offered nice room in a beachfront hotel, within my budget, had a shower and went out and ate a dosa, and all within an hour and a half of landing.
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, most european destinations!
